As autumn arrives, so does flu season. The influenza vaccine is one of the most effective ways to protect yourself and your family from the flu, and your GP is the easiest place to get it. Here is everything you need to know about the flu vaccine in Ireland, including who should get it, when to book, and what it costs.

What Is the Flu Vaccine and Why Does It Matter?

The flu vaccine is an annual injection that protects against the strains of influenza most likely to circulate each winter. Influenza is not the same as a common cold — it can cause severe illness, hospitalisation, and in some cases death, particularly among older adults, young children, and people with chronic health conditions. The HSE recommends the flu vaccine every year because the virus changes from season to season, and last year’s vaccine may not protect you against this year’s strains.

Who Should Get the Flu Vaccine?

The HSE recommends the flu vaccine for anyone aged six months and older, but it is especially important for people in higher-risk groups. These include adults aged 65 and over, pregnant women at any stage of pregnancy, children aged between 2 and 17, and people with long-term medical conditions such as diabetes, asthma, COPD, or heart disease. Healthcare workers and carers should also be vaccinated each year. If you live with or care for someone who is immunocompromised, getting vaccinated helps protect them too.

When Is the Best Time to Get Vaccinated?

Flu season in Ireland typically runs from October through to April, with cases usually peaking between December and February. The ideal time to get vaccinated is in September or October, before the virus begins circulating widely. It takes about two weeks for the vaccine to provide full protection, so booking early gives your immune system time to respond. Your GP practice will usually begin offering flu vaccines from late September or early October each year.

How Much Does the Flu Vaccine Cost?

If you hold a medical card or a Doctor Visit Card (DVC), the flu vaccine is free of charge at your GP. For private patients, the cost is typically between €25 and €35, which covers both the vaccine and the consultation. Children aged 2 to 17 receive the vaccine as a nasal spray rather than an injection, and this is also free for medical card holders. Even for private patients, the flu vaccine is one of the most cost-effective ways to avoid days off work, hospital visits, and the wider impact of influenza on your household.

What to Expect at Your Flu Vaccine Appointment

Getting the flu vaccine at your GP is quick and straightforward. The appointment usually takes no more than ten minutes. Your GP or practice nurse will ask a few screening questions about allergies and your medical history, then administer the injection in your upper arm. You can return to normal activities immediately afterward. Some people experience mild side effects such as a sore arm, slight tiredness, or a low-grade temperature for a day or two — these are normal signs that your immune system is responding. Serious side effects are extremely rare.

Can You Get the Flu Vaccine if You Are Pregnant?

Yes. The flu vaccine is recommended at any stage of pregnancy and is safe for both you and your baby. Pregnant women are at higher risk of complications from influenza, and getting vaccinated during pregnancy also passes some protection to your newborn during their first few months of life. If you are pregnant and would like to register with a GP or book a flu vaccine, your GP practice can arrange this quickly.
