Your GP is your first port of call for a wide range of women’s health concerns, from routine screening and contraception to pregnancy care and menopause support. Many patients are not aware of just how much their family doctor can help with, and accessing these services early can make a real difference to long-term health outcomes. This guide explains the women’s health services available through your GP in Ireland and how to access them.

Cervical Screening and Smear Tests

CervicalCheck is Ireland’s national cervical screening programme, and your GP or practice nurse can carry out your smear test during a routine appointment. Women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 65 are invited for screening every three to five years, depending on previous results. The test checks for human papillomavirus (HPV), which can lead to changes in cervical cells. If you have not received your invitation or have missed a screening, your GP can advise you on how to get back on track. For medical card and Doctor Visit Card holders, cervical screening through CervicalCheck is free of charge.

Contraception and Family Planning

Your GP can discuss the full range of contraceptive options available in Ireland, including the oral contraceptive pill, the mini pill, contraceptive patches, the hormonal coil (IUS), the copper coil (IUD), the implant, and the contraceptive injection. Under the current Government scheme, women aged 17 to 35 can access free contraception through their GP, including the cost of the consultation and the contraceptive itself. Your doctor will help you choose the option that best suits your health, lifestyle, and future plans. If you are already using contraception and need a review or a change, this can also be done at your regular GP appointment.

Pregnancy and Antenatal Shared Care

When you become pregnant, your GP plays an important role in your care alongside your hospital maternity team. Under the Maternity and Infant Care Scheme, all expectant mothers who are ordinarily resident in Ireland are entitled to free GP visits and hospital care throughout pregnancy and for six weeks after the birth. Your GP will carry out some of your antenatal checks, including blood pressure monitoring, urine tests, and general health reviews. Many women find it more convenient to attend their local GP for these appointments rather than travelling to the hospital each time. Your doctor can also support you with postnatal care, breastfeeding advice, and your six-week check-up after delivery.

Menopause Support and HRT

Menopause is a natural stage of life, but the symptoms it brings — including hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, difficulty sleeping, and joint pain — can significantly affect your quality of life. Your GP can assess your symptoms, discuss treatment options, and prescribe hormone replacement therapy (HRT) if appropriate. HRT is the most effective treatment for most menopausal symptoms and is available in tablets, patches, gels, and sprays. Your doctor will review your medical history and help you weigh the benefits and risks. If HRT is not suitable, your GP can suggest other approaches including lifestyle changes and non-hormonal treatments. Ongoing reviews ensure your treatment remains right for you as your needs change.

Breast Health and BreastCheck

While BreastCheck, Ireland’s national breast screening programme, invites women aged 50 to 69 for a free mammogram every two years, your GP is your first point of contact if you notice any changes in your breasts at any age. These include a new lump, changes in skin texture, nipple discharge, or persistent pain. Your doctor can examine you, arrange further investigations such as an ultrasound or referral to a breast clinic, and provide reassurance where appropriate. If you need a referral letter from your GP, the process is straightforward and your doctor will guide you through it.

Sexual Health and STI Testing

Your GP can carry out confidential sexual health checks and testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis, and HIV. If you are starting a new relationship, have had unprotected sex, or simply want peace of mind, booking a sexual health screen with your doctor is straightforward and discreet. Treatment for most common STIs is simple and effective when caught early.
