A repeat prescription is an ongoing prescription from your GP for medication you take regularly. If you have a long-term condition such as high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, or high cholesterol, your doctor may issue a repeat prescription so that you can collect your medication from the pharmacy without needing a new consultation each time. Understanding how this process works in Ireland can save you time and help you stay on top of your health.
What Is a Repeat Prescription?
In Ireland, a repeat prescription allows your GP to authorise a set number of refills for a medication you have been taking on an ongoing basis. Rather than booking a full appointment every time you need more tablets, your doctor reviews your treatment plan and writes a prescription that covers several months of supply. The pharmacy dispenses your medication each month based on this prescription, and you simply collect it when needed.
It is important to note that repeat prescriptions are not indefinite. Your GP will typically review your medication at regular intervals, usually every three to six months, to ensure the treatment is still appropriate. This review may involve a brief consultation, updated blood tests, or a blood pressure check, depending on the condition being managed.
How to Request a Repeat Prescription
The process for requesting a repeat prescription is straightforward at most GP practices in Dublin. You can usually phone your GP surgery and ask the receptionist to arrange a repeat prescription for your regular medication. Many practices ask that you give at least forty-eight hours’ notice so the doctor has time to review your file and sign the prescription. Some practices also accept requests by email or through an online patient portal.
When you call, it helps to have the name and dose of your medication to hand. If you are unsure, your pharmacist can provide these details from their records. Once your GP has signed the prescription, you can collect it from the surgery or, in some cases, it may be sent directly to your nominated pharmacy.
Do You Need an Appointment for a Repeat Prescription?
In many cases, you do not need a face-to-face appointment for a straightforward repeat prescription. Your GP can review your medical records and issue the prescription without seeing you in person, provided your condition is stable and you are up to date with any required check-ups. However, if it has been some time since your last review, or if your GP has concerns about your condition, they may ask you to come in for a brief appointment before renewing the prescription.
If you hold a medical card or Doctor Visit Card (DVC), your GP visit and prescription charges are covered or reduced under the General Medical Services scheme. Private patients should check with their practice about any fees associated with repeat prescription requests, as policies vary.
What About Controlled Medications?
Certain medications, including some painkillers, sleeping tablets, and medications for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, are classified as controlled drugs under Irish law. These cannot be issued as standard repeat prescriptions. Your GP must see you in person and write a new prescription each time, and the prescription must meet additional legal requirements such as being handwritten or bearing a specific format. If you take a controlled medication, it is best to plan ahead and book your appointment in good time to avoid running out.
Tips for Managing Your Repeat Prescriptions
Staying organised with your repeat prescriptions helps avoid gaps in your medication. Try to request your refill a week before your current supply runs out, rather than waiting until the last day. Keep a note of when your next GP review is due, and attend any recommended blood tests or check-ups promptly so that your prescription can be renewed without delay. If you are registering with a new GP, bring a list of your current medications and doses so your new doctor can set up your repeat prescriptions from the start.
