Weight loss injections such as Wegovy, Mounjaro and Ozempic have become some of the most talked-about treatments in Ireland over the past two years. These medications, known as GLP-1 receptor agonists, work by mimicking a hormone that regulates appetite and blood sugar. Clinical trials have shown average weight loss of fifteen to twenty-two per cent of body weight over twelve to eighteen months when combined with lifestyle changes. If you are considering this option, the first step is a consultation with your GP.

How Do Weight Loss Injections Work?

GLP-1 receptor agonists reduce appetite by acting on areas of the brain that control hunger and fullness. They also slow the emptying of the stomach, which helps you feel satisfied for longer after eating. Originally developed for managing Type 2 diabetes, these medications have since been licensed specifically for weight management in adults who meet certain clinical criteria. The most commonly prescribed options in Ireland are semaglutide (sold as Wegovy or Ozempic) and tirzepatide (sold as Mounjaro). Your GP will assess which treatment, if any, is appropriate based on your individual health profile.

Who Is Eligible for Weight Loss Medication?

These treatments are not available to everyone. In general, you may be considered eligible if your BMI is 30 or above, or if your BMI is between 27 and 29.9 and you have a weight-related health condition such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnoea or polycystic ovary syndrome. Your GP will also consider whether you have already tried to lose weight through diet and exercise. The consultation is an important step because your doctor needs to review your full medical history, check for contraindications, and take clinical measurements before issuing any prescription.

What Happens at a Weight Loss Consultation?

A weight loss consultation with your GP typically lasts twenty to thirty minutes. The doctor will take your weight, height, BMI and blood pressure, and discuss your health history, lifestyle and goals. If you meet the clinical criteria, a prescription can be issued on the same day. Your GP will also explain the dosing schedule, how to administer the injection, what side effects to expect, and when to return for a follow-up. Some practices offer both in-person and remote video consultations, making it easier to access the service regardless of where you live.

What Are the Costs?

Weight loss injections are not currently covered by the medical card or the Drugs Payment Scheme in Ireland. This means the consultation and the medication itself are private costs. A typical initial GP consultation costs around one hundred and fifty euro, with follow-up appointments from seventy euro. The medication is purchased separately at your pharmacy and usually costs between one hundred and two hundred and fifty euro per month, depending on the drug and dose. While this is a significant outlay, many patients find the health benefits and improved quality of life well worth the investment, particularly when supported by ongoing GP follow-up.

Are There Side Effects?

The most common side effects are nausea, constipation, and a reduced appetite, especially during the first few weeks of treatment. These usually settle as your body adjusts to the medication. Your GP will start you on a low dose and gradually increase it over several weeks to minimise discomfort. More serious side effects are rare but should always be discussed with your doctor. Regular follow-up appointments allow your GP to monitor your progress, adjust your dosage, and address any concerns along the way.
