Evidence-based weight loss medications

GLP-1 receptor agonists are the most effective medical weight loss treatments currently available. Our doctors prescribe based on your individual clinical profile.

Wegovy

Semaglutide 2.4mg

The gold-standard weight loss injection, licensed specifically for obesity management in Ireland. Clinical trials show average weight loss of 15–17% of body weight.

Licensed for Obesity

Mounjaro

Tirzepatide

A newer dual-action GIP/GLP-1 medication. Trials show superior weight loss vs semaglutide — up to 20–22% average body weight reduction. Currently the most effective option available.

GLP-1 / GIP Agonist

Ozempic

Semaglutide 0.5–2mg

Widely used for blood sugar control in Type 2 diabetes, with significant weight loss as an established benefit. Your doctor will advise whether this is appropriate for your situation.

T2DM Licensed

Medication is prescribed separately — not included in the consultation fee. Costs vary by pharmacy and drug (typically €100–250/month). Supply availability varies; your doctor will advise.

Who is this suitable for?

These treatments are clinically indicated for adults who meet certain criteria. Your GP will confirm eligibility at the consultation.

BMI ≥ 30

Adults with a BMI of 30 or above (obesity) are typically eligible for weight loss medication without additional criteria.

BMI ≥ 27 with health conditions

Adults with BMI 27–29.9 may be eligible if they have a related health condition such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sleep apnoea, or PCOS.

Previous weight loss attempts

These medications work best alongside lifestyle changes. Your doctor will discuss your history and goals to ensure this is the right approach for you.

Not sure if you’re eligible? Book a consultation — the doctor will assess you fully. If weight loss medication isn’t suitable, they will advise on alternative options.

Frequently asked questions

Is the medication included in the €150 fee?
No — the consultation fee covers your GP assessment, measurements, and prescription. Medication is purchased separately at your pharmacy. Costs vary but are typically €100–250 per month depending on the drug and dose. Your doctor will discuss costs at the consultation.

Will I definitely get a prescription?
A prescription is issued if you meet the clinical criteria. Your GP will assess your BMI, medical history, and any contraindications during the consultation. Some patients may not be suitable — your doctor will explain why and suggest alternatives.

How much weight can I expect to lose?
Results vary by individual and medication. Clinical trials show average weight loss of 15–22% of body weight over 12–18 months when combined with lifestyle changes. Most patients notice meaningful results within the first 12 weeks.

Are there side effects?
The most common side effects are nausea, constipation, and reduced appetite — especially in the first few weeks. These usually settle as your body adjusts. Your doctor will explain all side effects and how to manage them at your consultation.

Do I need bloods before I start?
Baseline bloods are recommended but not always required before your first appointment. Your GP will advise at the consultation — they may request HbA1c, cholesterol, thyroid, and kidney function tests.

How do follow-up appointments work?
We recommend a follow-up at 4 weeks (dose review), 3 months (bloods, weight, blood pressure), and 6 monthly thereafter. Follow-ups are €70 and can be in-person or remote. We’ll remind you when it’s time to book.

Can I get this on my medical card?
Unfortunately these consultations and medications are not currently covered by the GMS scheme. This is a private service only. Costs are the consultation fee (€150) plus monthly medication.

Is the remote consultation as good as in-person?
For most patients, yes. You will need to measure your weight, height and take your blood pressure before the call — we’ll give you clear instructions. If your GP feels an in-person review is needed, they will let you know.
