A sick certificate — sometimes called a doctor’s cert or medical certificate — is an official document issued by your GP confirming that you are unfit for work due to illness or injury. In Ireland, your employer may require one if you are absent from work for more than two consecutive days, though many workplaces request a cert from day one. Knowing how to get a sick cert from your GP in Dublin is straightforward once you understand the process.
When Do You Need a Sick Certificate?
Most employers in Ireland require a sick certificate if you are absent from work for three or more days. However, your employment contract may set a shorter threshold — some require a cert from the very first day of absence. It is worth checking your contract or staff handbook so you know what is expected. For absences related to a statutory sick pay claim, a cert is typically required from day one under the Sick Leave Act 2022, which introduced a legal right to paid sick leave for the first time in Ireland.
If you are on a prolonged absence, your GP will usually issue a cert covering a set period — for example, one to two weeks — and ask you to return for a review before issuing a further certificate. This is standard practice and is not a reflection of doubt about your condition; it allows your GP to monitor your recovery and ensure you receive any treatment that might help.
How to Get a Sick Cert from Your GP
The simplest way to get a sick certificate is to make an appointment with your GP. You do not need to be admitted to hospital or have a serious diagnosis — a sick cert can be issued for any condition that makes you unfit for your normal duties, including viral infections, anxiety, back pain, or post-operative recovery. Your GP will assess you, discuss your symptoms, and if they agree you are unfit for work, they will issue the certificate at that appointment.
In many Dublin GP practices, you can also request a sick cert via an online consultation or phone call, particularly if you are already a registered patient and your condition is straightforward. This can be helpful if you are genuinely too unwell to travel to the clinic. However, your GP may still ask you to come in if they need to examine you, or if the nature of your illness requires a physical assessment.
If you are not yet registered with a GP in Dublin, you will need to register first. Walk-in assessments may be possible in some cases, but having an established relationship with a GP makes the process significantly easier and faster.
What Information Does a Sick Cert Contain?
A standard sick certificate in Ireland will include your name, the date of the consultation, the period for which you are certified unfit for work, and your GP’s signature and practice stamp. It will usually describe your condition in general terms — for example, “acute illness” or “medical condition” — rather than giving a specific diagnosis. This protects your privacy while satisfying your employer’s requirements.
Some employers use specific certificate forms, particularly in the public sector. If your employer requires a particular format, it is worth mentioning this to your GP at the time of the consultation so they can complete the correct paperwork.
Sick Certs and Social Welfare
If your absence extends beyond the paid sick leave entitlement provided by your employer, you may be able to claim Illness Benefit from the Department of Social Protection. To do this, you will need an Illness Benefit Certificate (IB1) completed by your GP and submitted to the department. Your GP can issue this at your appointment, and you can submit it online or by post. You must have enough PRSI contributions to qualify, and you should apply from the first day of illness to avoid missing out on payments.
It is important to note that Illness Benefit is different from a standard sick cert for your employer — you may need both documents depending on your situation. Your GP’s receptionist can usually advise you on what is required at the time of your visit.
